Aromatherapy - What is it?
Aromatherapy is a branch of herbal medicine which uses aromatic substances extracted from plants, fruits and flowers to improve health and wellbeing. Aromatherapy enhances the body’s natural self-regulating and self-healing activities.

Through the sense of smell, the deepest human instincts and memories are influenced. We respond to aromas in less than three seconds, and because the oil molecules are so small they pass through the cell membrane quickly and diffuse into the blood stream. Essential oils oxygenate the blood stream and stimulate the immune system.

Aromatherapy Applications:
Essential oils can be administered in several different ways. Perhaps one of the most pleasant, relaxing and therapeutic ways is through a traditional aromatherapy treatment, which involves applying the oils through massage. Massage benefits the body by the stimulation of touch receptors and the regulation of energy flow via acupressure pathways. The combination of massage and essential oils can achieve excellent results.

Aromatherapy treatments can be continued at home through the use of aromatherapy bath blends, creams and gels. Aromatherapy can also be enjoyed through inhalation; either directly from the bottle for an immediate effect, or by aerial diffusion, using oil burners, aromastones and aromatisers. Diffusing the essential oils releases their germicidal properties into the air and as most of the oils are immune stimulating, this increases our resistance to ‘air-borne’ infections.

Massage Styles

Therapeutic Massage
This massage style is also known as remedial or deep tissue massage. It is designed to address deeper layers of muscle tissue which have become tense, causing chronic pain and injury. It can be used to treat arthritis, tendonitis, sports injuries, muscle tears and tissue trauma. The emphasis is on deeper strokes moving the blood towards the heart. It assists in cleansing the body of toxins by improving blood and lymphatic circulation.

Cross-fibre frictions and deep muscle compressions may be used to address injured tissue, increasing suppleness and flexibility of the joints and muscles. Therapeutic massage can be uncomfortable at times, so constant feedback is encouraged to ensure the treatment remains comfortable yet effective.

Swedish Relaxation Massage
This is a relaxing and nurturing massage style, based on the strokes invented by the father of modern massage, Swedish gymnast and fencing master Per Henrik Ling. This massage is a lighter style that promotes relaxation, using a firm and flowing pressure.

Swedish massage forms the basis of most western massage. Tension, anxiety and life's stresses melt away with this massage. This is the massage most likely to send you to sleep.
